Maintaining Health as You Age

January 25th, 2010

The aging process is going by each and everyday of our lives. Stopping the clock is impossible so we all need to stay healthy and take care of ourselves. There is no way you can turn around the process, as we grow older so except it and take care.

Start working now to take care of yourself as you age. Taking care of yourself now will help slow down those aging diseases. A person can do many things, as they get older to take care of their health.

You can start out by taking your multivitamins and all other prescriptions your health care provider has prescribed to you. Taking vitamins is as important as anything else you can do is. Vitamins will provide your body with repair tools. Vitamins will lessen the dangers and the risk of you getting some of the chronic diseases that you can acquire as you age. Diet alone doesn’t normally give a person all the vitamins that they need. In fact, experts show that millions of people in the world suffer malnutrition despite the fact that they eat three healthy meals per day.  People are known to eat too much fast food, go on fads or quick weight diets that harm the body. This builds stress, which causes loss of vitamins.

Maybe you’re a person who eats many processed foods because of your busy life style and there is just no time to cook the right meals. You could be one that stops off at a fast food place to eat three or four times a week before going to work or home from work because you are just to tired to fix supper. Remember eating all that fast food isn’t good for the digestive system and all that fat from them fries isn’t good. Take time to fix a meal and sit down to enjoy it; doing this will cut down on the calorie intake and it helps to relieve stress because your doing something good for you and or your family.

Stop worrying about everyone else; take time out for you. Stress is bad for your heart, which affects your blood pressure, nervous system, and is hard in general on your body.  Stress can cause many things, even causing a person to become obese. The world is turning at such a fast pace these days that there is never time to take care of us, so start now.

Try doing a little exercise to stay healthy as you age. Every little bit of exercise you do is better than not any at all.  An average person should exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes. A person has many options when it comes to exercise.  Walking is a great exercise, since it helps you keep those muscles more flexibly and stronger.

How happiness makes you live a longer life:
Happiness is another way to stay healthy as you age. If you are not happy find out why and turn it around so you will be. Being happy and being with friends is always a good way to keep the stress away to. Don’t let yourself get depressed and down; it will make your aging come upon you sooner than you want and it can cause you to be a very sick person. Depression is a sickness and you want to stay away from all that.

Again, there is no way you can stop from aging so stay in good health and slow it down.  Keep yourself happy, do those exercises and take those vitamins. Staying active helps keeps the stress down, keep you stronger and you’ll feel better for doing it.

Health Perception

January 19th, 2010

An important area to focus on as you transition towards retirement is in the area of Health Perception.

Health Perception measures how you see your health as being an important part of your retirement life. It reveals to you your own appraisal of your health. The retirement assessment can tell you if you have some health concerns (in your own opinion), that you do not believe you are in the state of health you would like to be in, or it can tell you that you believe you are in great health.

A low score in the area of health perception shows that you see this as less important for your overall retirement success, making your health an area of concern. What most people want in retirement living is dependent on health, so a low score automatically makes this become a critical area. The good news is that you now have this information at a time in your life when you can make some changes if you decide to.

Health can be affected by attitudes: by what we believe. Our belief about our physical state of health directly affects what we can do and how we feel. Our inner beliefs influences our body, these can’t be separated. This area of mindset is discussed more thoroughly in the The ‘Secrets to Retirement Success Home Study System™’, where an entire section is dedicated to Mindset.

A low score in the area of health perception indicates a strong concern about your health. Because health is such a critical item, this area needs to be considered carefully. If your scores do not meet with your identified plan then you need to consider changes in your life style and belief system. Your assessment will identify whether this is an area of concern for you or not.
Resolve to live a long and healthy life. If you aren’t already, become in tune with your lifestyle, making sure it includes healthy foods, exercise, and some form of relaxation and stress control. You need to be vigorous in finding better and healthier ways of staying fit and healthy! You have considerable control over your state of health by the health practices you engage in. Use these beliefs to motivate you to continue staying healthy.

When people believe they are healthy, they either continue working or move towards an active retirement lifestyle. When people believe they are ill, they want to retire as soon as they can so they can rest and remove themselves from an environment that seems stressful. Retirement becomes a solution to their condition. Often, you’ll hear phrases like, “getting out” or “needing some rest”. These are strong motivators that push individuals to retire early.

Seek an active retirement lifestyle or find a way to become involved again in a second career or job. Be prepared to be active and busy while enjoying the benefits of living a fun, healthy life! Your views and the actions you take are a part of the relationship you have with yourself. Life should be enjoyed!

Your Assignment:

What changes, if any, can you make to become more healthy? Do you engage in at least twenty minutes of vigorous exercise (such as fast walking, jogging, swimming) three or more times a week? Do you drink no more than one cup of coffee or tea or one can of caffeinated soda pop per day? Can you get seven to eight hours of sleep every night, eat meat or other fatty, high-cholesterol foods no more than once a day?

Each of these things you can do contribute to your health. Don’t feel that you have to start them all at once. Add in one new activity that you’re not already doing and do it consistently for a month before adding in a second area. Before you know it, your health will improve and your view of your retirement may change too.

Next week we’ll talk briefly about the area of Projected Financial Security and Planning

There’s More to Healthy Lifestyle than Exercise

March 25th, 2009

You would be mistaken to think only about exercise when you consider starting a keep fit program.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, exercise is important, but so is your diet. Real fitness means a healthy body…free from the problems that take all the fun out of life.

Fact: Our modern way of life contributes to a nutrient deficient diet – no matter how well fed we think we are.

Fact: Food refining strips up to 80% of minerals from food as nature intended it to be.

Fact: Air pollution, man-made pesticides and toxic chemicals damage our environment.

We can live full, rich and healthy lives if we just take action and incorporate a few straight-forward changes in eating and life-style habits.

But with so many fad diets, and so much conflicting information that even the experts seem unable to agree, it’s no wonder you may have failed trying to improve your health and weight, by diet and/or exercise.

In fact, it’s not your fault and you’re not alone. The UK Government’s Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson pulled no punches in warning that much of the British public is becoming obese at an alarming rate.

What is particularly alarming is the fact that so many children are overweight too. We live in an age where parents are, understandably, anxious about children playing out in the streets, so instead they may spend hours in front of the computer or TV.

Given that we live in what is commonly referred to as “The Information Age”, this is very surprising; in which case why aren’t we all slim, fit and healthy?

As a qualified nutritionist, I have been seeing clients since 1999, and come to a stark conclusion. There’s more to “Keep Fit” than just exercise and diet. No matter how enthusiastic nutrition clients, or new gym recruits, start off, 80% of them will not follow-through with the long-term life-style changes needed to benefit from their new knowledge. The other 80% will have wasted their time and money.

Consider two typical, but very different, clients – a busy Mum and a highly-stressed executive. Both are looking for advice on healthy eating and exercise. t is just too easy to wheel out a standard “Five-a-Day” and “30 minutes daily exercise on five or more days a week” formula, but this may be totally impossible for some clients. For most people, this advice is totally inadequate unless motivation and lifestyle are considered.

In addition to receiving advice on diet and supplements, clients need to seriously explore the benefits they’ll experience from a healthier life-style, and to consider the consequences of not following through on what they’ve learned. Some people won’t make changes even when they fully realize the risks involved in their present life-style – as evidenced by those continuing to smoke despite the health warning on cigarette packets.

While a one-off nutrition consultation or coaching session can be useful to kick-start you into a new way of eating and living, the effect can soon fade. To be successful, your health and fitness programme must fit into your life as an on-going program, so it’s helpful to source a recurring series of practical tips on incorporating healthy eating into your every-day life.

A steady input of advice and new ideas is much more likely to keep you focused on healthy eating for healthy living.
