Drink Tea to Fight Heart Disease

December 6th, 2009

It may be too much for some even to think of drinking eight cups of tea a day but health experts say the intake can help fight heart disease, improve brain power and also boost longevity.

Independent dietician Dr Carrie Ruxton’s research on caffeine at King’’s College, London, saw her review 47 published studies to reach the conclusion that caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and cocoa have positive effects on mental function, increasing alertness, feelings of well-being and short-term memory.

It was already linked the drink’s healthy antioxidant properties and high flavonoid content to preventing heart disease and cutting the risk of some cancers by precious studies.

Dr Ruxton has supported earlier reports by claiming that an optimal intake of 400mg of caffeine a day leads to “key benefits in terms of mental function and heart health.” She assessed three studies, accounting for almost 90,000 patients, to find that drinking four cups of tea or coffee a day reduced chances of cardiovascular disease.

She also referred to another study of 26,500 middle-aged smokers, which hinted that men who ingested more than two cups of tea a day pulled down the probability of getting a stroke by 20 per cent.

Dr Ruxton insisted that she aimed to “debunk” false beliefs surrounding caffeine. Moreover, she asserted that people who avoid drinking team might be doing more harm than good. “People who cut out caffeinated drinks may miss out on the potential health benefits of the compounds they contain,” the ‘Daily Express’ quoted her as saying.

She further suggested that there is no need for parents to stop children from drinking tea and coffee. In fact, she claimed it was better than juice in some regards.

Also, Dr Catherine Hood, of the Tea Advisory Panel, agreed to Dr Ruxton’s claims. She said: “Caffeinated drinks have been unfairly demonised. Black tea, in particular, contains polyphenols, which are natural plant antioxidants. These have beneficial effects on many biochemical processes in the body because they protect cells against harmful free radicals.”

“Flavonoids are thought to be especially useful, with a number of studies reporting a link between them and lower risk of heart attack,” she further added.

For 4,000 years, the Chinese people have been using green tea as treatment for everything from headaches to depression.

Today, studies are conducted in Asia and the west in order to produce hard evidence of the health benefits of green tea. In the 1994 edition of the Journal of National Cancer Institute, the results of an epidemiological study stated that one of the health benefits of drinking green tea is that it can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by up to 60%.

The rich presence of catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the reason why green tea has so much health benefits. A powerful antioxidant, EGCG can not only inhibit the growth of cancer cells but can also destroy them without harming healthy cells.

The University of Purdue has also concluded a research on how a certain compound present in green tea can stop cancer cells from growing. Still another health benefit of green tea is its ability to lower down cholesterol levels and improve the ratio between good (HDL) cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Are Most Health Studies About Bad Health?

September 21st, 2009

According to a study published in “Psychosomatic Medicine”, feeling lonely – even when surrounded by family and friends – is  linked to an  increase in the risk of heart disease. The study covered more than 3,000 people over 19 years. After having a physical and an extensive personal interview, all participants’ heart health was tracked. The women who were loneliest at the beginning of the study were 76% more likely to develop heart disease. Researchers hypothesize that loneliness affects only women in this way because women are more concerned about relationships. It seems men can have fulfilling relationships with remote controls.

According to a recent study, high and borderline-high cholesterol levels in midlife increase the risk of Alzheimer’s 30 years later. The cholesterol levels of 9,844 people ages 40-45 were determined between 1964 and 1973. When their medical records were reviewed between 1994 and 2007, the risk of Alzheimer’s was 57% higher for people who had cholesterol levels of 240 and above in midlife. Their risk of vascular dementia also increased. Even those who had  borderline-high cholesterol levels of 200-239 in midlife had an increased risk of 50%. Considering nearly 100 million Americans have high or borderline-high cholesterol levels, it’s time to level off.

According to a study funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, severe sleep apnea increases the risk of early death by 46%. Severe sleep apnea causes sleepers’ airways to be blocked for 20-30 seconds, waking them about every 2 minutes. Of the 6,400 people in the 8-year study, 8.2% of the men had severe cases and 3% of the women. The NHLBI estimates that 12 million adult Americans have sleep apnea and recommends weight loss as the best treatment. Unfortunately, most people aren’t diagnosed or treated – in spite of their losing sleep over the problem nightly.

Nevertheless, in spite of all the bad health news, the National Center for Statistics reports that U.S. life expectancy has reached a new high. The average life expectancy for a baby born in 2007 is nearly 78. That’s almost 3 months more than for babies born in 2006. This increase is primarily due to the decreasing death rates in almost all leading causes of death. However, about 30 countries have longer estimated life spans, with Japan having the longest. The average life expectancy for Japanese babies born in 2007 is 83. Products made in Japan do seem to last longer.

Calcium is an Important Mineral to Overall Health

September 20th, 2009

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our bodies. We all know that we need calcium for strong bones and teeth. But do you know that calcium provides many other health benefits? It is needed for muscle contraction, blood vessel expansion and contraction and the secretion of hormones and enzymes. It is also used to transmit pulses throughout our nervous system. Once we know the importance of calcium you will be better able to manage your health.

We all know that we need calcium for strong bones and teeth. It is the most abundant mineral in the body. But do you know that calcium provides many other health benefits? It is needed for muscle contraction, blood vessel expansion and contraction and the secretion of hormones and enzymes. It is also used to transmit pulses throughout our nervous system. Once we know the importance of calcium you will be better able to manage your health.

A lack of calcium can increase your risk of developing blood clots. This can lead to serious medical problems. A blood clot (thrombosis) is a partial or complete blockage in our arteries or veins which can lead to nerve, heart, or muscle problems. Adding to this problem is the fact that it is difficult to know if you have a blood clot. It is usually looked for when certain surgical procedures are done or there is evidence of a heart health problem.

Many women have inadequate levels of calcium. For this reason the importance of calcium can not be emphasized enough. The average women’s intake of calcium is about half of what is needed. Combined with the fact that we expel calcium through our feces, urine and perspiration you can see why a shortage of this essential mineral will occur over time having a negative implication to our overall health.

Many people do not realize the importance of calcium. This is particularly true in the younger people in our population. They are encouraged to drink milk for strong bones and teeth but as we grow older that is usually replaced by soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. They hear of the need for calcium but associate it with a condition that affects older people. The truth is that adequate levels of calcium are needed through our complete life cycle.

Calcium plays an important role in our cardiovascular health. The average adult requires 700mg to 1000mg of calcium on a daily basis. If they have other problems such as osteoporosis that requirement may increase to 1500mg daily.

Osteoporosis is a crippling disease that affects older people, usually over 50. It is more common in women after menopause but also affects men. The disease is characterized by porous or fragile bones and can be very painful. More than 10 million people in the United States have osteoporosis with 80% of them being women. It results in over 1.5 million fractures a year. The most common types being hip, wrist, vertebrae and rib fractures.

When calcium intake is to low or absorption into the body is not adequate we start to use calcium that is stored in our body to complete and maintain normal biological functions. There are many risk factors for osteoporosis such as being female, thin, inactive or advancing age.

SOURCES OF CALCIUM

Calcium is found in some of the foods we eat, it is added to others or we get it from dietary supplements. It is also present in some medications that we take such as antacids. The main food sources of calcium for people in the United States are milk, cheese and yogurt. Non dairy sources of calcium are vegetables such as kale, cabbage and broccoli. Grains for the most part do not contain much calcium unless they are fortified. This is not to say they do not contribute to our calcium intake. While the levels are low these are foods that people eat all the time.

Another important source of calcium is dietary supplements. There are basically two types of supplements available, they are carbonate and citrate. Both of these are absorbed into the body equally under normal conditions. It is known that people with reduced stomach acid will absorb calcium citrate more easily. You will absorb calcium carbonate more efficiently if it is taken with food where the body can absorb calcium citrate equally with or without food.

When taking calcium supplements it is good to know that absorption into the body is optimum at doses or 500 mg or less. If you take 1000mg per day it would be more efficient to take two doses of 500mg over the course of the day.

It should also be noted that some people will experience bloating, gas or constipation when taking calcium supplements. This can easily be avoided by spreading out the dosage, taking it with meals or changing your brand of supplement.

Heart disease treatment with natural remedies

September 16th, 2009

Heart diseases are  that type diseases of the heart and the blood vessel system within the heart. Many people   those surprised to learn that there many different heart diseases. In fact  for some reason  there are over 50 types of heart diseases that most common being coronary artery disease. This confusion may stem from the fact that coronary artery disease is right often referred to simply as “heart disease.”

Heart diseases though fall within the broader category of cardiovascular diseases, which are kind of  conditions that not only affect the heart, but also  for the blood vessel system (arteries, capillaries, and veins) within a person’s entire body, such as the brain, arms, legs, and lungs. “Cardio” refers to the heart; “vascular” refers to the blood vessel system.

Some people are already born with heart diseases (such a disease is known as a congenital heart disease); others  those develop during a person’s lifetime. Because there are so many types of heart diseases, it may be helpful to categorize them based on the areas of the heart that  or blood vessel system they affect, such as:

* Arteries and veins
* Electrical system
* Heart chambers
* Heart muscle itself
* Heart valves
